Choosing fabric for outdoor cushions
Outdoor fabric has to deal with sun, rain and mildew. The fibre and the way it is dyed matter more than the look on day one.
The main choice is usually between solution-dyed acrylic, polyester and olefin.

Why solution-dyed matters
In solution dyeing, pigment is added while the fibre is made, so colour runs through it. In surface-dyed fabric, colour is applied afterwards and may fade sooner outdoors.
Three common outdoor fabrics
Solution-dyed acrylic
A common choice for long outdoor exposure.
Polyester
Solution-dyed versions hold colour better than surface-dyed ones.
Olefin
Long-term UV performance varies, though newer fabrics have improved.
Fabric is only part of it
Thread, zips, filling and drainage also affect how a cushion ages. Ask your manufacturer to review the whole construction, not only the outer fabric.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best fabric for outdoor cushions?
Solution-dyed acrylic is often chosen for fade resistance. The best choice depends on exposure, budget and product life.
Is polyester good for outdoor use?
It can be, especially solution-dyed polyester with suitable finishes, but standard polyester generally offers less long-term UV resistance than premium acrylic.
Are outdoor fabrics waterproof?
Many are water-repellent rather than waterproof. Check how the fabric is rated and how the cushion drains.
